Step-by-Step annual haunted house opens Friday

Witches and crazed butchers and chainsaw murders, oh my! Step-by-Step Inc., 103 Ford St., is preparing for its third annual haunted house from 7 to 10 p.m. Friday and 4 to 10 Saturday.

For $2, community members may tour the offices of Step-by-Step which have been transformed into a virtual house of horrors, featuring a graveyard, corn maze and creepy laboratory. Refreshments will be served.

“The haunted house is the biggest event we hold all year,” Step-by-Step Assistant Skye M. Sharp said Wednesday. “It’s a chance for the community and our members to come together and for non-members to see what we’re all about.”

Step-by-Step is a peer-run, nonprofit organization that assists adults 18 and older with diagnosed mental health issues. The organization provides meals, advocacy, self-health services and transportation with funds from the St. Lawrence County Mental Health Services.

The organization serves about 50 people each day, Ms. Sharp said.

“We also have apartments offering wraparound services and greenhouse where members can their own crops, which can be therapeutic and empowering,” Ms. Sharp said.
