BOONVILLE A Port Leyden woman escaped relatively unscathed after driving into the Black River Canal here on Wednesday afternoon.
Oneida County sheriffs deputies said Anna L. Kraeger, 22, Thomas Road, was northbound about 12:40 p.m. on Route 12 in the village when she fell asleep, causing her 1995 BMW convertible to go off the right side of the road, hit a sign post at the entrance to Erwin Park, become airborne and then skid across park property before going airborne again and coming to rest in about 5 feet of water.
Ms. Kraeger was able to escape through the passenger window and swim to shore, where bystanders helped her from the water, deputies said.
She was taken by Boonville ambulance to Lewis County General Hospital, Lowville, for evaluation.
Members of the Oneida County Sheriffs Department dive team helped to remove the vehicle from the canal, while state Department of Environmental Conservation, police and emergency spill team officials assisted with cleanup of vehicle fluids that leaked into the waterway.
No tickets were issued.
