Section 3 roundup: Lyme boys soccer get past Old Forge

Mark Parker generated a goal and two assists, and Christian Sanford made four pivotal saves to spark the Lyme boys soccer team past Old Forge, 3-2, on Thursday in a Class D first-round Section 3 playoff game at Watertown High School.

The eighth-seeded Indians (13-4) advance to quarterfinals and will play at top-seeded Poland at 3 p.m. Saturday.

Parker’s goal came on a corner kick for the Indians. Tanner Wiley and Nick Birchenough also scored for Lyme.

John Gaffney was credited with 15 saves for the ninth-seeded Eskimos (9-6-1).

FOWLER 3, INDIAN RIVER 1

The No. 8 Warriors put a scare into the top-seeded Falcons, scoring the first goal of the game. But Fowler, the top-rated Class A team in the state, scored the next three goals later in the first half to earn a quarterfinal win at Corcoran High School in Syracuse.

Erick Torres scored from Junior Malinoski in the 16th minute for Indian River (13-4-1). Goalie Hunter Mullican made six saves.

Abdulkareem Abdulkareem scored twice and Karebo Ndikije also scored for Fowler (17-0).

GIRLS SOCCER

COPENHAGEN 6, STOCKBRIDGE VALLEY 0

Claire Stackel scored three goals to spark the top-seeded Golden Knights over the ninth-seeded Cougars in a Class D quarterfinal at Carthage.

Brooke Spaulding contributed a pair of goals, and Maci Spaulding generated a goal and an assist for Copenhagen (17-0), which advances to the semifinal round next week at a date and time to be determined against the winner of today’s quarterfinal between Lyme and Remsen.

Mackenzie Kidder made two saves for the Golden Knights, ranked second in the state in Class D.

Emma Roberts and Alicia Evans each registered two assists for Copenhagen. Olivia Marshal was credited with 20 saves for Stockbridge Valley (7-8-3).

BEAVER RIVER 1, SANDY CREEK 0

Kristen Ebersol scored 30 seconds into the game and the No. 4 Beavers held off the No. 5 Comets for a Class C-2 quarterfinal victory in Beaver Falls.

Mariah Abel made six saves for Beaver River (7-6-3), which will play No. 9 Waterville in the semifinals. Waterville upset top-seeded and previously unbeaten Bishop Grimes, 3-2, on Thursday.

McKenna Guarasce finished with 14 saves for Sandy Creek (6-7-2).

SAUQUOIT VALLEY 1, IMMACULATE HEART 0

Abbey Mielnicki scored the game’s only goal as the top-seeded Indians (15-2) eliminated the No. 9 Cavaliers in a Class C-1 quarterfinal in Sauquoit. Skylar Short made 14 saves for IHC (5-10-2).

HERKIMER 1, THOUSAND ISLANDS 0

The No. 5 Magicians (12-4-1) knocked off the No. 4 Vikings (12-4) in a Class C-1 quarterfinal in Clayton. No other details were provided.

Games rescheduled

The General Brown at Westhill Class B boys quarterfinal was rescheduled from Thursday to 5 p.m. today in Syracuse.

The Lyme at Remsen girls game, originally scheduled for Thursday, was postponed due to poor field conditions. It has been rescheduled for 6 p.m. today at SUNY Institute of Technology in Utica.

FOOTBALL

CHITTENANGO 34, WATERTOWN 18

The Cyclones saw their season end with a Class A crossover loss at Chittenango (4-4).

Juan Ruiz scored a pair of touchdowns for Watertown (1-7) on runs of 10 and 1 yard. Tyler Hooker also scored on a 1-yard run.
