M-W boys complete undefeated NAC East Division soccer title run


MADRID - Madrid-Waddington completed an unbeaten NAC East Division season on Friday with a 4-0 victory over visiting Norwood-Norfolk.

“We’ve had our ups and downs this season but we always found a way to win. It might not have been easy at times especially like our last game at St. Regis Falls but we did it. We had a great run in the East but we have the playoffs now. We’re likely the No. 1 or No. 2 seed but there are a lot of good teams in the Class D ranks,” said M-W coach Jeff Stein as his squad finished at 12-0-2 in earning the East Division banner.

The Yellowjackets (13-1-2 overall) scored a pair of goals in each half.

In the seventh minute, Kyle Pickering scored off a Jeff Mott feed for the only goal needed TJ Gagnon made nine saves for the shutout. Mott scored off a indirect kick from John Lenney in the 24th.

Harrison VanBuren converted a Kaden Pickering pass in the 54th and Kaden Pickering logged an unassisted goal in the 67th to finish the scoring.

Garrett Waite made 20 saves for the Flyers (7-8-1, 6-7-1), who enter the post-season as the top seed for the Section 10 Class C tournament.

St. Lawerence Central will travel to Brushton-Moira on Monday in the only first round matchup with the winner taking on N-N in the Class C final slated for Saturday, November 2, at the SUNY Canton turf field starting at 3:30 p.m.

The Yellowjackets, who are likely to earn an opening-round bye, will now gear up for the Class D playoffs which get underway with four first round game on Wednesday.

In the other NAC East finales on Friday, Colton-Pierrepont dropped St. Lawrence Central 4-0 and Chateaugay edged Parishville-Hopkinton 2-1 while Brushton-Moira and St. Regis Falls played to a scoreless draw.

C-P 4, SLC 0: Striker Noah Whalen figured in three of the four goals and Bruce Avery stopped just two shots to post a shutout as Colton-Pierrepont won its regular season final over St. Lawrence Central. “We finally put everything together,” said C-P Coach Jim Nee. Whalen combined with Ethan Knight to set up John Porter just 33 seconds before the half and then scored from Knight in the fifth minute of the second half. After Porter scored his second goal of the game three minutes later from Scott Boye Whalen set up Riley Doyle with 11 minutes remaining in the game. Hadyn St. Hilliare handled nine shots for SLC (1-13-1, 1-12-1). The Colts (4-10-2, 4-8-2) head into the Class D playoffs starting on Wednesday while the Larries are slated to open the Class C tournament on Monday on the road against Brushton-Moira starting at 3 p.m. The winner of that game advances to the sectional final against top-seeded Norwood-Norfolk on Saturday, November 2, at the SUNY Canton turf starting at 3:30 p.m.

Chateaugay 2, P-H 1: Jumping out to a 2-0 lead in the first 14 minutes of the game, the Bulldogs (12-3-1, 11-2-1) then held on for the win over the Panthers (10-3-3, 8-3-3) at home.

Seth Young scored from Chad Stalter in the eighth minute and Stalter buried a penalty kick in the 14th minute for Chateaugay.

Wyatt Snell scored unassisted in the 21st minute for the Panthers.

Josh Trombley had four saves for the Bulldogs. Kobe Wells had four saves for the Panthers in the setback.

B-M 0, SRF 0: At Brushton, Taylor Talman handled 13 shots for the host Panthers (2-8-4) while Mike Smith made 18 saves for the Saints (4-8-2).
