Potsdam boys spoil OFA’s bid for unbeaten Central season

Potsdam Central spoiled OFA’s bid for an undefeated league season while Salmon River completed a sweep over Massena Central in NAC Central Division varsity boys soccer finales on Friday.

Potsdam 3, OFA 1: At the Potsdam turf field, the host Sandstoners netted three goals over the final 16 minutes of the first half en route to handing the Blue Devils their first league loss in the regular season finale for both squads.

Matt Normandin opened the scoring in the 24th minute off an assist from Dominic Frascatore, who struck for the eventual game-winner just five minutes later assisted by Pat Normandin. Ebuka Ononye capped the decisive first-half scoring surge when he finished off a play set up by Ian Vitek with three minutes remaining.

Conor Hannan netted the lone OFA goal 23 minutes into the second half by converting on a penalty kick.

Ashler Herrick went the distance between the pipes for the Sandstoners and finished with eight saves backstopping the win while Jacob Sias fielded eight shots in the loss.

Both teams will now gear up for the Section 10 Class B playoffs which get underway on Tuesday with Salmon River hosting Gouverneur at 3 p.m. The winner of that game travels to Ogdensburg next Friday to take on top-seeded OFA (11-2-2, 9-1-2) while the other semi-final will see Potsdam (11-6, 8-4) head to Canton. Both semi-finals start at 3 p.m. The Class B final is slated for Monday, November 4, at the SUNY Canton turf field starting at 6:45 p.m.

Salmon River 2, Massena 1: At Fort Covington, the visiting Raiders got on the board first when Joshua D’souza finished off a play set up by Dalton Mullin 15:42 into the game but the Shamrocks rallied to score a pair of goals over the final 13 minutes and relayed a 2-1 halftime lead into the win.

Nick Hynes tied the game in the 28th minute assisted by Bryton Burns. Antoine Domino broke through for the eventual game-winner off an assist from Austin Leroux with 2:05 left in the half.

Zach Smith handled four shots working the crease for the win while Cameron Marsh posted five saves for the Raiders.

While the Shamrocks (6-10, 4-8) make their Class B tournament debut on Tuesday at home against Gouverneur, the Raiders (5-11, 4-8) will gear up to take on Franklin Academy in the Section 10 Class A Championship Game on Tuesday at the Potsdam Central turf field starting at 7 p.m.

Canton 6, Gouverneur 0: At Roger Dursharm Field, the host Bears built a 4-0 lead by halftime in turning back the Wildcats. Jake Facey anchored a balanced offense for Canton with a goal and two assists. Nate Gibson, Stephen Folk, Matt Mende, Josh Huiatt and Jacob Oatman struck for the other goals while Scott Wight fielded the three shots he faced working the crease for the shutout.

Seth Carr had 19 saves in the losing effort.

Two NAC West Division boys soccer curtain calls on Friday saw Harrisville clinch the regular season banner in settling for a 1-1 tie at home with Lisbon and Heuvelton blank Hermon-DeKalb 2-0.
