Watertown teen jailed over explosives, domestic dispute in Copenhagen


COPENHAGEN — A Watertown teenager was jailed Thursday on charges that he possessed a homemade explosive device and threatened a couple of other youths on separate occasions in the village.

Lewis County sheriff’s deputies charged Joshua A. Beaumont, 17, Ohio Street, with second-degree menacing, second-degree criminal mischief and two counts apiece of endangering the welfare of a child and second-degree harassment stemming from an alleged domestic dispute Thursday afternoon at a Route 12 residence in the village.

He was accused of initially hitting a girl several times in her face, head and body. Then, when the girl was able to contact a friend to come to her aid, Mr. Beaumont allegedly tried to hit the person with a baseball bat, then began to hit a 2006 Toyota Tundra that was parked in the driveway, deputies said.

Following his arrest, he additionally was charged with first-degree criminal possession of a weapon, a class B felony, stemming from an alleged incident last month.

The Watertown youth was accused of making an explosive substance contained in two plastic bottles and, on Sept. 7, throwing the bottles at an occupied residence on Cataract Street with the intent of having them explode.

Deputies said that while the explosives did not detonate, they noticed a chemical reaction when they arrived on the scene that day and called in the Fort Drum Explosive Ordnance Disposal unit to dispose of them.

Mr. Beaumont was arraigned in Denmark Town Court and sent to Lewis County jail, Lowville, with bail set at $10,000 cash or $20,000 bond.
