Waddington to hold a meet the candidates night

WADDINGTON – The Town will hold a Meet-the-Candidates night for democratic, republican and independent candidates running for office on Nov. 5.

The open forum will be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Waddington Hepburn Library Community Room.

The event is being sponsored by the town’s Democratic and Republican committees.

“It’s not a debate setting, but it is a chance for the public to meet the candidates and ascertain their positions on any issue,” Republican Chairman Russell B. Strait said Friday.

Incumbent Town Supervisor Mark Scott called for a debate earlier this election season, but was denied by Democrat and Republican nominee Sandy R. Wright said she preferred to talk to people’s concerns by knocking on doors.

Mr. Scott trailed Mrs. Wright by almost 50 votes in the Republican primary.

Mr. Scott said he is looking forward to the opportunity to answer the public’s questions.

“This is an opportunity for the public to learn more about candidate’s views on specific issues,” he said. “I hope candidates come prepared to tell the public what they would do if elected and residents attend and ask questions. This election should be about an exchange of ideas and how best to move the town forward - that is what residents expect and deserve.”

Mrs. Wright said she also welcomes the opportunity.

“I am still working on meeting with people,” she said. “I have had some very positive feedback so far. People are glad and want to see you. That’s been my focus since day one. I look forward to meeting more candidates at the meet-and-greet who are interested in learning what I am about and stand for.”
