CROGHAN, NY ~ Irene E. Widrick, 82, of 7934 Long Pond Road, Croghan, died peacefully in the comfort of her own home on Friday evening October 25, 2013, surrounded by her loving family and under the care of Lewis County Hospice.

Irene was born on her family’s homestead in Indian River on February 23, 1931, the daughter of Frank and Margaret Brown Boliver. She was educated in country schools and was a 1949 graduate of Indian River High School.

She married Arnold D. Widrick on April 29, 1950, in St. Stephens Catholic Church, Croghan. Mr. Widrick died on September 25, 1998.

Irene was a loving mother and homemaker who enjoyed taking care of her large family. Even while and after raising her own children, she was well known as the Community Mother and Grandmother in Belfort, looking after many of the area’s kids who would regularly hang out at her house.

For many years she had been employed as a seamstress at the former Lollie’s in Lowville. Additionally, she worked as a bartender at the Indian River Hotel and had been an assembly worker at the Kraft Foods Plant in Lowville for a short time back in the 1980’s. She was a member of St. Stephen’s Church in Croghan and was a life member of the VFW Memorial Post 6912, Lowville.

Her family was the most important aspect of her life and she is survived by seven children, including six sons, Arnold D. Widrick Jr., and his companion Louann Martin of Belfort, Stanley G. (Joan) Widrick, Croghan, Bruce F. Widrick of Belfort, Rodney J. (Nancy) Widrick, Croghan, John R. (Barbara) Widrick, Carthage, and Philip A. (Kimberly) Widrick, Croghan; a daughter, Rose Marie Widrick, Oswego; 14 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; two sisters, Lena Aucter and Evelyn Yousey, both of Croghan, a sister-in-law, Nancy Boliver of New Bremen, and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by four brothers, Herbert, Earl, Lyle and Harold Boliver, and a sister, Edna Moore, who died on August 29, 2013.

Irene’s funeral will be held Tuesday, October 29, 2013, beginning with a 9:45 a.m. Prayer Service at Scanlon Funeral Home, Croghan, followed by a 10:30 a.m. Funeral Mass in St. Stephen’s Church, Croghan, with Rev. Daniel L. Chapin, Pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in St. Vincent DePaul Cemetery, Belfort.

Calling hours will be held from 4-8 p.m. on Monday, October 28, 2013 at the funeral home.
