Author Melissa Febos will discuss her memoir Whip Smart as part of SUNY Cantons Living Writers Series.
Ms. Febos will speak at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Richard W. Miller Campus Centers Kingston Theater. The event is free and open to the public.
On one level, Whip Smart is a page-turning romp through the gritty world of professional S&M and drug addiction, while on another it is a much more universal tale of a young womans search for identity, comfort and power, said SUNY Canton assistant professor of English Phil K. LaMarche. Written with striking honesty, impressive prose and intense emotional acuity, this book not only sheds light on some of the darker corners of our world, but on hidden parts of ourselves that so often go unexplored.
Now in its second year, the series was created by Mr. LaMarche to correspond with his Living Writers course. Students enrolled in the class read the books by the authors scheduled to visit the college.
Since publishing her memoir, Ms. Febos has appeared on NPRs Fresh Air, CNNs Dr. Drew and Anderson Cooper Live.
