MENACING - MASSENA - Village police picked up Joseph M. Olmstead, 31, of 20 Boynton St., Massena, on an arrest warrant charging him with fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon and second-degree menacing at 10:40 p.m. Sunday on Ober Street.

Police said the charges stemmed from an investigation into a domestic dispute that reportedly took place on Oct. 13. He reportedly was involved in a verbal argument with Crystal L. Durocher over his drinking that escalated after she had asked a friend to call police for assistance in removing him from her apartment. She told police she had invited Olmstead over earlier in the evening, but they had started arguing over his drinking.

Olmstead allegedly walked intot he living room and grabbed a Savage Arms 12 gauge shotgun , pointed it at Durocher’s forehead and threatened to kill her if she didn’t call the police and tell them to disregard the intiial call for assistance.

Olmstead is prohibited from having firearms as the result of a May 12, 2003 conviction in St. Lawrence County Court for second-degree attempted burglary.

Olmstead was taken into custody Sunday evening when he left a residence on Ober Street.

He was arraigned by Massena Village Justice Eric J. Gustafson and sent to the St. Lawrence County Correctional Facility with bail set at $5,000 cash or $10,000 bond.

Following arraignment, he will be turned over to state police, who hold a bench warrant from St. Lawrence County Court.

A St. Lawrence County grand jury handed up an indictment in November charging Olmsteadwith aggravated driving while intoxicated. According to court documents, Olmstead was the operator of a 1988 on North Main Street, Massena, on Aug. 30 when stopped by police. His blood alcohol content was recorded at 0.21 percent. The state legal limit is 0.08 percent. Olmstead was convicted of a misdemeanor DWI count Sept. 13, 2008 in Norfolk Town Court
