High school sports: Four area football squads to play close to home

Last weekend’s six-game sweep by Frontier League teams in the Section 3 football quarterfinals has earned four of those teams much shorter trips for this weekend’s semifinals.

Indian River, General Brown, Immaculate Heart Central and Thousand Islands will be playing close to home in their semifinal matchups after impressive victories in their respective classes.

Indian River (7-1 overall), the top seed in Class A, returns to Watertown High School at 7 p.m. Friday for its semifinal against No. 4 Jamesville-DeWitt (6-2). The Warriors, who beat No. 8 Fulton 44-17 at WHS last Friday, defeated the Red Rams 23-6 at home this season.

Also in Class A, No. 3 Carthage (7-1) travels to Fulton at 7 p.m. Friday to take on No. 2 East Syracuse-Minoa (7-1) in the other semifinal. Carthage ousted No. 6 Nottingham 42-6 and ES-M topped No. 7 New Hartford 50-14.

Both Class C semifinals will be held at Carthage High School on Saturday. First at noon, No. 5 General Brown (7-1) meets No. 8 Utica Notre Dame (5-3). The Lions, who edged No. 4 Frankfort-Schuyler 14-12 in the quarterfinals, beat the Jugglers 33-30 in last season’s sectionals.

Utica Notre Dame knocked off No. 1 Syracuse Institute of Technology 32-28 on Friday.

Following at 3 p.m. is the other Class C semifinal matching No. 3 IHC (8-0) against upstart Thousand Islands (5-3), the No. 7 seed. The Cavaliers pounded No. 6 Skaneateles 49-7, while the Vikings shocked No. 2 Sherburne-Earlville 23-12.

IHC blanked Thousand Islands 26-0 in the opening game of the season.

Sandy Creek, the defending Class D champion seeded fifth, travels to Rome Free Academy at 7 p.m. Friday for its quarterfinal against No. 8 Dolgeville. The Comets rallied to beat No. 4 West Canada Valley 34-14 on Saturday, while the Blue Devils upset No. 1 Weedsport 27-20.

Sandy Creek won last year’s quarterfinal pairing with Dolgeville, 28-21.

Finals in the Carrier Dome are scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 9 and Sunday, Nov. 10. The Class A final is at 6 p.m. on Nov. 9. Class C is at noon on Nov. 10 and Class D is slated for noon on Nov. 9.
