Potsdam sweeps past Canton into Section 10 Class C volleyball final

POTSDAM - After challenging each other for the NAC West Division regular season title, the Potsdam Central and OFA varsity girls volleyball teams earned a chance to square off for the Section 10 Class C championship by sweeping past their semi-final round opponents on Monday.

Potsdam, which captured the West Division banner, advanced to the sectional final by downing Canton 25-12, 25-21, 25-15 while OFA turned back defending Class C champion Salmon River by scores of 25—20, 25-20, 25-16.

The top-seeded Lady Sandstoners are now slated to take on the second-seeded Lady Blue Devils on Wednesday at the Massena Central high school gym starting at 4:30 p.m. The Class D final between Edwards-Knox and Chateaugay is scheduled to follow at 6:30 p.m. while Massena and Franklin Academy will decide the Class A title at the Potsdam Central high school gym on Wednesday at 5 p.m.

Potsdam 3, Canton 0: In Potsdam, the Lady Sandstoners opened the playoffs the same way they ended the regular season after posting a convincing sweep over the Lady Bears.

“We have a really solid set of players who have been playing varsity for a number of years. For most of them, volleyball is their only sport and they’ve worked hard at it. We’ve had a very good season but we’re not done yet,” said coach Julia Pahler after the Lady Sandstoners improved to 15-2 overall.

“We had to work hard to win both our matches with Ogdensburg this year and if that’s who we end up playing, it’s going to be a real challenge for us,” she added.

Junior Elna Daby led a strong showing from the service line for Potsdam with a team-high 16 points, including three aces. Senior Victoria Mondragon tallied 14 points, eight aces and seven kills and junior Sarah Vivlamore generated 30 sets, nine assists, seven points, three aces and two kills.

Cianna Willmart and Colleen Barkley anchored the Canton effort with eight and seven points respectively, including three aces each. Angelina Vecchio came off the bench to serve up four straight points in the second set. Megan Howard (3 points) and Beth Pearson notched two kills apiece while Ali Mousaw recorded a team-high three digs as the Lady Bears finished the season at 6-11 overall.

OFA 3, Salmon River 0: In Ogdensburg, Mara Lazore led the visiting Lady Shamrocks (8-9) with seven points and three blocks. Raven Oakes fashioned six points and three kills. Iakohonwentsiawakon Mitchell served up another five points followed by Erica Martin with three. Taylor Fisher finished with team highs of 15 points, six aces, seven kills and two blocks in leading OFA (13-4). Emma Hart finished with nine points, four aces, two kills, five assists and three digs and Jennie Dalton served for four points with one dig.

In the two Class D semi-final matches on Monday, defending champion Chateaugay improved to 17-0 by downing Tupper Lake in three straight (25-4, 25-8, 25-12) and Edwards-Knox advanced past Madrid-Waddington 3-0.
