Boys and Girls Club of Massena seeks chamber member support

MASSENA — Representatives of the proposed Boys and Girls Club of Massena are seeking support from the Greater Massena Chamber of Commerce’s member businesses.

With a capital campaign goal of $750,000 for the purchase and renovation of a building and five years of operating expenses, “we need the community to step up,” Capital Campaign Committee member William Wolf told chamber members during their recent meeting to support the cause. “Boys and Girls Clubs do not rely on the government.”

Timmy J. Currier, village police chief and chairman of the club board of directors, said the club, an offshoot of the Neighborhood Watch program, can go a long way in helping Massena’s youth. He said that despite the image of Massena as a retirement community, statistics show only 16.6 percent of the population is over age 65, and 23.5 percent is under 18.

“One out of four kids are born into poverty. Those kids can’t afford to do anything,” such as participate in hockey or soccer, said Mr. Currier, noting 51 percent of Massena Central School District students quality for free or cut-price lunches.
