MASSENA Village Police Chief Timmy J. Currier confirmed Tuesday afternoon that police are working with school officials on an investigation into prescription drug use at Massena Central High School.
Since this is an ongoing investigation, I cant really say much more than that, Mr. Currier said Tuesday afternoon.
He confirmed that four or five students had ingested prescription drugs while at school, but declined to use the term overdose.
Village police responded to assist Massena Rescue for one student and then responded to a second call at the high school about two hours later.
Interim Superintendent William W. Crist said at this point, the district is simply collecting information, both for its own internal investigation and as part of its collaborative efforts with village police.
When asked whether the drugs were obtained from another student, Mr. Crist said, We believe so, but were not sure yet.
He said the incident involved both boys and girls, several of whom were taken to Massena Memorial Hospital, some via ambulance and some by their parents. Our interest right now is the health and safety of the kids, he said.
Mr. Crist said disciplinary action against the involved students has yet to be discussed. Criminal charges also may be pending.
