SUNY Canton hosting USCAA National Volleyball Championships


CANTON - The SUNY Canton women’s volleyball team is getting set to host the 2013 United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) National Championships, which will begin on SUNY Canton’s beautiful campus starting later today.

The Roos will welcome nine other teams to town to crown the 2013 USCAA National Champion.The three-day tournament runs from today through Saturday beginning with pool play. The 10 total teams are split into two separate five-team pools. Each team will square off with the other four teams in their respective pools with two matches each on Thursday and Friday. The Roos have earned the fourth overall seed and second seed in Pool B.

The field consists of 10 teams from seven different states. Eight of the 10 teams are coming back from last year’s championships, while the tournament will feature two newcomers in overall No. 1 seed Marygrove College and 10 seed Lindenwood Belleville.

After pool play the top four teams from each pool will be reseeded and a single elimination tournament will begin on Friday evening. Saturday includes two semifinal matches, a consolation contest and the national championship match.

SUNY Canton opens the 2013 tournament Thursday against Lindenwood University – Belleville at 10a.m. in Dana Hall. The Roos will then square off at approximately 2:30 p.m. against Johnson & Wales University also in Dana.

The hosts open play on Friday at 10a.m. with a match against Rochester College, before an approximate 2:30 p.m. tilt with Florida College. Following that contest the top four teams will be re-seeded to begin the elimination round.

Tickets will cost $5 per day or $15 for a weekend pass.

Prior to the USCAA Tournament the Roos will prep the national tournament with four matches this Friday and Saturday at the Houghton College Invitational.
