CARTHAGE — The Wilna Town Council has set a public hearing for Monday, Nov. 4, to solicit public comment on the tentative 2014-2015 budget.

The total spending plan for the fiscal year starting Jan. 1 is $2,773,253, with $845,917 to be raised by taxes townwide. Last year’s approved budget was $2,726,522 with $1,433,888 raised through taxes at a tax rate of $3.25 per $1,000 of assessed property value. The tentative tax rate for the 2014 budget is $2.95. The tax increase is at 1.04 percent which is less than the two percent state mandated tax cap.

“The tax rate is down due to the revaluation,” said Supervisor Paul H. Smith.

Also contributing to the lower tax rate are the pay down on the joint justice court and the town municipal building according to the town supervisor clerk James E. Yuhas. He also pointed out that with the reevaluation of property some property owners may see an increase in their taxes depending on the change in their property assessment.

The budget includes salaries for village employees as follows: supervisor, $15,150; deputy supervisor, $2,000; four councilmen at $5,500 each; town clerk/tax collector, $39,000; highway superintendent, $57,000; and town justice, $11,900.

The public hearing is set for 4 p.m. with the regular monthly town board meeting to follow at the town offices, 414 State St.
