A pickup truck struck a house when it was involved Wednesday morning in a two-vehicle accident at Old Rome State Road and Route 3 in the town of Hounsfield.
No one was injured in the crash, reported about 7:35 a.m., a Jefferson County sheriffs deputy said at the scene. But the owners of the house at 20829 Old Rome State Road had to be evacuated because the pickup smashed into the natural gas outlet on the side of the house, causing a leak, the deputy said. National Grid was called to the scene to turn off the natural gas.
The house did not sustain any structural damage, the deputy said.
Sackets Harbor Fire Department firefighters were called to the scene and spent several minutes figuring out how to remove the pickup without causing further trouble with the natural gas, a witness said.
The names of the drivers of the pickup and the car, which ended up in a ditch near the northwest corner of the intersection, and other details of the crash were not available from police.
