Weather service issues high-wind warning; National Grid gets ready


The National Weather Service issued a high-wind warning for a broad section of New York, including the north country, from late Thursday through mid-evening today.

Winds from the southwest at 30 to 40 mph, with gusts to 60 mph, are expected throughout the period.

The strongest winds, the service said in a weather warning statement, are expected today.

“Winds of this magnitude may bring down some trees and power lines, resulting in scattered power outages,” the statement said.

They also may make travel difficult for high-profile vehicles.

National Grid, in a statement issued Thursday morning, said it is “closely monitoring” this situation and has made arrangements to have crews in the field quickly to respond to outages.

The company has offered several ways to stay in touch to report outages and learn about restoration efforts.

n National Grid Outage Central is available for customers to report outages or learn about restoration efforts and important safety information:

n Outage reporting hotline — Call 1-800-867-5222 to report an outage.

n Text messages — Customers can receive text message alerts by texting the word STORM to NGRID (64743). Customers can opt out at any time by texting the word STOP to NGRID (64743).

n Facebook or Twitter accounts can connect with the company and other customers. You can also view images from the field and get safety tips and the latest updates on restoration efforts.

nIf power goes out, customers can access the mobile website by going to on a mobile phone to report outages, check the status of an outage, view outage maps, view important messages and access safety tips.
