New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets has awarded $37,500 to Jefferson County to develop local agricultural and farmland protection grants.
Jefferson County was one of four municipalities that garnered funding, including Steuben and Ontario counties, and the Town of Milton in Saratoga County.
Planning grants are designed to provide local municipalities with an economic incentive to develop local agricultural and farmland protection plans. Plans help maintain the economic viability of the states agricultural industry and protect the environmental and landscape preservation values associated with agriculture.
Any municipality in Jefferson County is eligible for a farmland protection planning grant. Funds can provide up to $25,000, or 75 percent of the cost of developing a local protection plan.
