WADDINGTON – Public service is second nature to Patricia VanPatten, whether she is volunteering with homecoming, the garden club, or working at the town beach.
All my life I have been a community-minded person, Mrs. VanPatten said.
She is hoping to continue that tradition by running as a democrat for town council this November.
If she wins, Mrs. VanPatten will serve her first term on the council, but this wont be her first time in office. She has also served on the towns planning board and zoning board.
Mrs. VanPatten said her three major goals for her time in office are expanding tourism activities, infrastructure and local entrepreneurship.
One of the major challenges our community faces, is the lack of employment opportunities for our local youth after they graduate from high school, Mrs. VanPatten said I will work to be creative in adopting plans for attracting tourism-focused businesses that are unique to the area.
She said those businesses would include vineyards, boating rentals, and fishing guides.
Mrs. VanPatten said first priority to increase tourism will be to build a trail system from Coles Creek State Park to Waddington.
So much of the beauty of the St. Lawrence cannot be experienced just from driving down the highway, she said. A trail system from Coles Creek to downtown would expose the unique beauty of the river.
From hiking, snowshoeing, cycling to fishing, the trail could have a variety of uses, she said.
She said a big way to develop property is to work with the New York Power authority to return shoreline rights and property back to the town to have increased access and greater opportunities for tourism.
With the Bassmaster tournament this past summer, so many people were exposed to our community, she said. I think it will be an exciting future for Waddington.
