Madrid-Gerald T. Haney, age 92, of 3550 CR 14 of Madrid, passed away Tuesday morning (October 29, 2013) at Canton-Potsdam Hospital in Potsdam, NY. Gerald was born April 5, 1921 in Canton, the son of John and Jenny (Hesselgrave) Haney. He is survived by his two sons and a daughter, Suzanne Gray of Lisbon, Charles “Chuck” Haney of Pennellville, NY, and Richard Haney of Northampton, PA. Nine grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild, and many nieces and nephews. Also surviving is a brother John Haney of Schuylerville, NY. Gerald was predeceased by his wife Betty Haney in 2005, three sisters Doris Storrin, Marion Cunningham and Dorothy VanAtter, and two brothers Robert and Adrian Haney.

Gerald graduated from Madrid High School where he played many sports, and went on proudly to serve his country in the U.S. Marine Corps during WWII. Returning home honorably, Gerald married the love of his life Mary “Betty” Bushaw on April 26, 1943 at St. John the Baptist Church with the Rev. JJ Gainor. He worked for himself for many years. He owned and operated a painting business and liquor store in Madrid. He also worked for Breckenridge Oil Company in Potsdam where he delivered fuel oil and was a service manager fixing furnaces all around the North Country. At one time Gerald worked at ALCOA, and even shuttled workers from the surrounding communities back and forth from work and driving snow plows for the Madrid DPW in the winter. Gerald retired from Madrid-Waddington Central after twenty years as a bus driver.

Calling hours will be held Sunday Nov. 3, 2013 from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at the Phillips Memorial Home, Madrid. A Funeral Mass will be held Monday Nov. 4, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. at St. John the Baptist Church, Madrid with Rev. Msgr. Harry Snow officiating, with burial in St. Mary’s Cemetery Canton, NY following the service.
