Cape Vincent officials gave away home rule

At Cape Vincent’s Meet the Candidate Night, Michelle Oswald states she remains committed to protecting our home rule.

What is it about this board that they just can’t understand how dumb that statement is, and yet, they keep touting that as their one and only achievement?

You guys gave away our rights to home rule, as it pertains to our town’s wind development, to Gov. Cuomo in September 2012 when it was decided your zoning was so restrictive it was deemed unreasonable.

And obviously not even understandable by either the Town Board or Zoning Board (who wrote the laws) as proven by this latest fiasco regarding solar panels: “Yet another improperly issued work permit for a solar power project, this time for Town Supervisor Urban C. Hirschey’s residential photovoltaic system is prompting local zoning officials to consider aligning the local law with state guidelines,” reported by the Watertown Daily Times, Oct. 16.

Nice job.

And yet, you continue to spend tens of thousands of dollars trying to throw punches and claim you’re protecting our home rule.

Well, none of you have arms long enough to reach to Albany.

Then you claim on a recent flier that your goal is to continue to operate on a balanced budget.

Didn’t you schedule a public hearing on Oct. 17 for the purpose of raising our tax cap? Doesn’t that scream, “Sorry, we need even more of your money in order to meet our proposed budget”?

Which, by the way, includes raises for yourselves, once again.

This has got to stop.

We have to restore honesty, intelligence and accountability to our Town Board.

Please join me in supporting Al Wood, Dennis Pearson, Paul Aubertine and Betty Pearson on Election Day.
