High school soccer: Beaver River girls celebrate first Section 3 title in school history


CORTLAND — Beaver River’s girls soccer team edged Little Falls, 1-0 on Saturday afternoon to win Section 3’s overall Class C championship.

The Beavers (10-6-3) won their fourth consecutive playoff game — all shutouts — to claim the first sectional title in program history.

Freshman Kaylee Olmstead scored an unassisted goal in the 64th minute for the game-winning tally for Beaver River.

Junior goalie Mariah Abel made five saves to post the shutout for the Beavers, who won their first Class C-2 title since 1991 with a win over Fabius-Pompey on Wednesday.

Later on Saturday, Poland defeated Copenhagen 4-2 to secure Section 3’s Class D championship in girls soccer.

Mikayala Blumenstock scored a pair of goals for the Tornadoes (17-2) and Kara Morrison and Paige Sullivan followed with a goal each in the second half.

Claire Stackel tallied two goals in the first half for Copenhagen (18-1), which rallied to tie the game at 2-2,

Poland ousted the Golden Knights from the Section 3 tournament for the second consecutive year after edging Copenhagen in a Class D semifinal last season.
