Inmate charged with assault for biting officer at county jail

ASSAULT - CANTON - St. Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department deputies charged Doland R. Sylvia Jr., 29, of Palmer, Mass., with second-degree assault Friday following an investigation into an incident at the St. Lawrence County Correctional Facility. Sylvia reportedly bit an officer that was escorting him at the county jail. The officer received medical attention for his injury. Sylvia was arraigned on the assault charge by Canton Justice Cathleen O’Horo and sent back to the county correctional facility.

The Massachusetts man had pleaded guilty in March 2011 in separate cases to stabbing a man and breaking an inmate’s nose while in the St. Lawrence County Correctional Facility.

Sylvia, 26, Palmer, Mass., pleaded guilty to two counts of second-degree attempted assault. He admitted stabbing Richard Manford in the back four times during an argument while partying Dec. 2. 2010 at 749 Route 11C, Brasher Falls. Manford recovered from those injuries.He also confessed to punching Thomas P. Mauckin the face Dec. 26, 2010 at the jail and breaking his nose during an argument.

That plea agreement had covered two other matters, a second inmate fight and the shooting a of 12-year-old boy in the thigh three times Sept. 12, 2010 with a BB gun in Brasher Falls.
