High school cross country: South Jefferson’s Miller leads way

JAMESVILLE — Jackie Miller of South Jefferson crossed the finish line of the Class B girls race in fifth place to qualify for the state meet during the Section 3 cross country championships Saturday at Jamesville Beach County Park.

The state meet is scheduled for next Saturday at Queensbury high school.

Skylar Pastor was 15th out of 128 runners for South Jefferson, which placed fourth with 117 points. Genny Corcoran won the 3.1-mile race for top team Westhill-Ludden, which scored 46 points.

In the Class D girls race, Sierra Corbett was 10th, in a field of 142 competitors, to help lead South Lewis to second place with 94 points. Sage Hurta of Hamilton won the race, and Tully scored 45 points to take the team title.

Emily Lighthall, Sierra Kempney and Taylor Moore were 11th, 13th and 15th, respectively, to pace Beaver River (97 points) to third place.

Christina Platt and Gaelyn Bronson were 20th and 21st for South Lewis.

Rachel Yerden placed 27th for eighth-place Sandy Creek.

Leif Ostrum and Dylan Durgan crossed the finish line 10th and 11th for South Lewis in the Class D boys race to guide South Lewis to third place with 139 points.

Beaver River finished second with 115 points, while Sauquoit Valley (49) was the top team.

Greg Virkler, Alize Jarrett, Brett Neddo and Connor Demo took the 20th through 23rd places, out of 179 runners, for Beaver River. Troi Wall was 38th to lead Sandy Creek.

Nicholas Spina won the race for Sauquoit Valley.

Nick Anderson of Carthage highlighted the local finishers in Class B boys by crossing the finish line 19th out of 154 runners.

Carthage took ninth place out of 17 teams, while Whitesboro upset favored Westhill-Ludden to claim the team title with 59 points. Westhill-Ludden (80 points) finished second.

Donald Cean was 31st for South Jefferson (11th place), and Austin Millisor took 33rd for Indian River (14th).

Austin Myers was 47th to lead Watertown (15th).

Jesse Perrone won the race for East Syracuse-Minoa, which was fifth.

In Class C boys, Travis Bender, who runs independently for Lowville, finished 49th out of 135.

Fayetteville-Manlius captured both the boys and girls races in Class A. Bryce Millar captured the boys race for F-M, while Annika Avery was the fastest girl.
