DWI - HELENA - Massena-based state police charged Darren A. Cook, 26, of 146 Helena Road, Hogansburg, with driving while intoxicated following an investigation into a vehicle fire reported at 4:10 a.m. Saturday on Route 37C in the town of Brasher.
Troopers said Cook was driving on Route 37C when he noticed smoke coming out from underneath of the hood of his vehicle. He stopped and unsuccessfully attempted to put the fire out with river water. Cook then reportedly attempted to grab some personal items out of the vehicle, burning his hands, before leaving the scene. He was located a short time later by St. Regis Mohawk Tribal Police Department and transported to the hospital for treatment of his burns.
Troopers said they are awaiting blood test results to determine his blood alcohol content.
PROPERTY DAMAGE ACCIDENTS - CANTON - State police responded to a number of property damage accidents around the county on Monday. Among those:
■ Cindy L. McLean, 47, of Colton at 5:03 p.m. on County Route 27 at Silver Hill Road in the town of Russell.
■ Nancy E. Samphier, 64, of Massena at 3:41 p.m. on County Route 52, near Cemetery Road, in the town of Lawrence.
■ Steven J. Broad, 25, of Chateuagay at 10:39 p.m. on County Route 32, near Broad Road, in the town of Bombay.
