Massena man released from jail; placed under probation supervision on pending misdemeanor charges

MASSENA - A Massena charged with two misdemeanor charges late last months following his second set of arrests following domestic dispute with his wife has been released from jail.

Massena Village Justice Eric J. Gustafson released Christopher A. Northrup, 39, formerly of 20 Parker Ave., Apt. 2, Massena, under the supervision of the probation department with stipulations he reside in Winthrop, consume no alcohol and comply with any recommended treatment for alcohol or substance abuse charges.

Northrup had been charged with third-degree assault and fourth-degree criminal mischief at 2:21 a.m. Oct. 21 after police responded to a domestic dispute complaint.

The couple were reportedly returning home from Friar Tucks when Northrup punched his wife, Cassondra, several times. She reportedly suffered several lacerations to her tongue and lips.

He spent two and a half days at the county with bail set at $5,000 cash or $10,000 bond before Mr. Gustafson changed the securing order and released Northrup from custody.

Village police had previously charged Northrup with second-degree harassment and endangering the welfare of a child at 11:31 p.m. Oct. 4. Police said in that incident an argument broke out over someone eating the last of the ice cream.

He reportedly pushed his wife into the bedroom and onto the bed. The argument took place in the presence of the couple’s children - ages 6, 11 and 13.

In other recent court action before Judge Gustafson:

■ Christopher J. Konsul IV, 30, of 1 Depot St., Potsdam, was sent back to the county jail with bail continued at $1,500 on a violation of probation count. He is also being held by a Potsdam count. Konsul reportedly violated his sentence on a second-degree criminal contempt conviction when he failed to appear at the jail on the weekend of Aug. 30 to serve part of his intermittent sentence.

Konsul had been sentenced in May to spend weekends in jail - from 6 p.m. Fridays to 6 p.m. Sundays - for six months for the criminal contempt conviction. That sentence was scheduled to end after the weekend of Nov. 15-17.

He had admitted he had violated a stay away order of protection issued by Massena Justice Gerald P. Sharlow when he was at Michelle L. Bell’s residence on May 25, 2010 the day after the order of protection had been issued. The plea also satisfied several other charges pending in Massena courts.

Village police had responded to Ms. Bell’s apartment after receiving a complaint of a domestic violence incident. They had charged Konsul with a felony count of first-degree criminal contempt. Prosecutors later made a motion seeking to have that charge reduced to a misdemeanor and returned to local court.

Bell had told police she had confronted Konsul on May 25, 2010 about an incident that allegedly had occurred the previous day when he was intoxicated and had his pants down while he was visiting a neighbor.

She told police he became angry and responded that he didn’t remember because he was drinking. Then he said he was going to have his sisters “kick the .... out of me after I have this baby or he could do it right now if I wanted,” she recounted in her statement to police at the time of the incident.

Ms. Bell said she went to the bedroom to get a phone, but Konsul held her down on the bed, took the phone and then left to smash it in the road.
