BALDWINSVILLE - Two players with family roots in Massena emerged as the top doubles tandem for the Baldwinsville Central girls tennis team this fall.
Senior Taylor Ferrari and sophomore Natalie Kot recently completed a successful season that saw them advance to the New York State Qualifying Tournament. Both players are the granddaughters of Massena residents and each has a parent that graduated from Massena Central.
Ferraris grandparents are Levan and Clara Margosian and her mother, Jill Margosian Ferrari, is a member of the MCS Class of 1980 while Kot is the granddaughter of Ted and the late Marion Kot and her father, Bill Kot, is a 1982 grad. Margosians mother was a skilled player in her own right during her North Country days, having won several tennis tournaments in Potsdam and Massena while Kots father lettered in varsity soccer and basketball during his high school days.
Casually acquaintances while growing up in Baldwinsville where they attended different elementary schools, Ferrari and Kot became tennis teammates on the high school squad in 2010. At that time, Ferrari was a freshman at Durgee Middle School while Kot attended Ray Middle School as a seventh-grader.
Ferrari played doubles her first season before going on to compete in singles as a sophomore and junior while Kot had consistently played doubles through her first two years.
Heading into her senior year, Ferrari was hoping to end her career on a high note and recognized that returning to doubles would provide her the best opportunity to qualify for the state tournament. After having won a few singles matches early this season, Baldwinsville coach Paul Maestri agreed with Ferraris decision to play doubles and matched her up with Kot, who is normally a doubles player and had won a sectional title last year with a different partner, going on to states where they went as far as the second round.
The decision to pair them up turned out to be a good one as the Ferrari/Kot team posted an 8-1 record with their only regular season loss coming in a match against Fayetteville-Manlius. They went on to compete in Individual Sectionals for Section III. They got to the semi-finals but lost again to the same Fayetteville-Manlius team. Despite that loss, by making it to the sectional semifinals they earned a chance to compete in the State Qualifer Tournament where they wound up placing fourth. In doing so, the duo went further than expected but still fell short of reaching the state tournament.
Ferrari plans to play tennis in college when she graduates next June and Kot will be a junior next year at C.W. Baker High School.
Ferraris father, David, is originally from Camillus while Kots mother, Sue, originally hails from Oneida.
