NYS Zoo at Thompson Park announces new mountain lion

A new female mountain lion cub will make her home at the New York State Zoo at Thompson Park, after the zoo acquired her Thursday.

According to a news release from the zoo, the cub was one of three that had been orphaned recently in southwest Oregon. Her two siblings were relocated to the Lee Richardson Zoo in Garden City, Kan.

The zoo said the unnamed cub will join 2-year-old Ninja on exhibit next spring.

According to the zoo, mountain lions live mostly in the western United States and Canada. They weigh 75 to 150 pounds and have a carnivorous diet both in the wild and at the zoo. Females are either pregnant or raising cubs most their lives.

After three months of gestation, two or three cubs usually are born in a litter and live with their mother for up to two years.

The zoo also said that with the exception of Florida panthers, cougars are not listed as endangered, but they do face many challenges because of human encroachment and habitat destruction.

The zoo credited Michelle Schireman of the Oregon Zoo, Portland, with passing it information about the cub.
