OFA football advances past Saranac Lake


MASSENA - The OFA football team rallied from a 12-0 deficit to claim a 27-19 decision over Saranac Lake in the opening round of the NYSPHSAA Class C tournament at Mike Nicholas Field on Friday.

The Blue Devils improved to 9-1 with the win and will now get set to take on Section 2 champion Hoosick Falls next Friday night at the Stillwater High School field starting at 7 p.m.

After giving up the first two touchdowns of the game, the Blue Devils generated the next two in taking a 14-12 lead into halftime. They added another 13 points to go ahead 27-12 before giving up a fourth-quarter touchdown.

Josh Liebstein anchored the OFA effort, completing nine of 17 passes for 103 yards including touchdown strikes to Jon Rogers (11 yards), Jon Tayler (9 yards) and Jordan McCormick (8 yards). Rogers scored the other OFA touchdown on a 28-yard run in the third quarter. Liebstein was also the leading rusher for the Blue Devils with 69 yards on 16 carries.

Sophomore Tristan Fitzgerald completed 19 of 19 passes for 113 yards while being intercepted twice and scored on a one-yard run in the losing effort as Saranac Lake finished the season at 5-5. Trent Fitzgerald rushed for 102 yards on 19 carries including a touchdown run of eight yards that opened the scoring in the first quarter. Dylan Gunther scored the second touchdown of the game from 11 yards out. that put the Red Storm ahead 12-0 in the second quarter.

In the Class D tournament, Section 7 champion Moriah outscored Tupper Lake 29-14.
