New Ogdensburg chamber executive director nearing selection

The Greater Ogdensburg Chamber of Commerce expects to name a new executive director next week.

President-elect Michael S. Brashaw said Friday that President Lori A. Smithers will announce the appointment in a press release.

Mrs. Smithers was unavailable for comment on Friday.

Sandra M. Porter is retiring Dec. 31. She has been executive director since September 2006.

Mr. Brashaw said that 12 people applied for the executive director’s position and six of them were interviewed.

Mr. Brashaw said that Ms. Porter’s successor will have considerable shoes to fill because she was responsible for the noticeable increase in popular, some of them profitable, chamber-sponsored events such as the GreenMarket farmers market, the North Country Wine Beer and Food Festival and the Ogtoberfest.

“The chamber is at a crossroads now,” he said.

The chamber has 285 dues-paying business and individual members and a 25-member volunteer board of directors.

The board members serve 19 committees.
