High school swimming: Marilley guides WHS to fourth place in Class B


NEW HARTFORD — Julia Marilley took third in the 50-yard freestyle and swam on the third-place 200 medley relay to help power the Watertown girls swimming team to a fourth-place finish during the Section 3 Class B championships on Friday night.

Watertown scored 205 points, while Jamesville-DeWitt claimed the team title with 546 points. New Hartford (481) and Whitesboro (257) were second and third, respectively. South Jefferson (175) finished fifth out of nine teams.

Marilley also placed fifth in the 100 free and contributed to the fourth-place 400 free relay for Watertown.

For South Jefferson, Hannah Markey took fourth in both the 50 and 100 freestyles, and she was a part of the third-place 200 free relay and fifth-place 400 free relay.

Claire Sauter finished fourth in the 100 butterfly and swam on the fourth-place 200 medley relay for Carthage.

Rachel Rodriquez placed seventh in the 100 backstroke and ninth in the 100 butterfly for Indian River.

Alden Coyne captured the 50 and 100 freestyles and swam on the victorious 200 medley relay and 200 freestyle relays for Jamesville-DeWitt.


Ashlynn Gilfillan of General Brown and Grace Metzler of Lowville highlighted area finishers during the Section 3 Class C championships at Skaneateles.

Gilfillan, a sophomore who swims independently alongside the South Jefferson squad, placed second in the 50-yard freestyle and sixth in the 500 free.

Metzler, a freshman, took third in the 100 free and fourth in the 50 free. She swam on Lowville’s fourth-place 200 medley relay and fifth-place 400 free relay.

Skaneateles scored 343 points to capture the team title, while Holland Patent took second with 324 points. Cooperstown (252) was third, while Lowville (250) and Thousand Islands (238) were fourth and fifth, respectively, out of ten teams.

Kelsey McLean of Lowville finished fourth in the 200 free and fifth in the 500 free. She also contributed to the fifth-place 200 and 400 free relays.

Emily Birchenough added a fourth-place finish in the 100 backstroke for Lowville.

Darien Frederick was fourth in the 100 breaststroke for Thousand Islands, while teammate Joanne Bechaz was sixth in the 100 butterfly and eighth in the 500 free.

Molly McCulloch captured the 50 free and 100 butterfly with Section 3 Class C records and state-qualifying times for Holland Patent. Rachel Teixeria won the 200 and 500 freestyles for Skaneateles.

Diving is scheduled for 11 a.m. today at Mexico. The state qualifier meet is Sunday at Hamilton College in Clinton.
