High school football: Carthage outlasts Indian River in dramatic final drive

SYRACUSE — Carthage topped off an historic north country Section 3 championship clash with a dramatic final drive to edge Indian River 21-20 for the Class A football title Saturday night at the Carrier Dome.

Carthage’s Bailey Wilkinson engineered a 14-play, 90-yard drive with no timeouts in the final two minutes, then handed off to Josh Yelvington for the go-ahead two-point conversion to clinch the victory.

After Indian River rallied to go ahead 20-13 in the second half, the Comets received the ball on their own 25 for their final drive but were penalized twice to push them back to the 10-yard line. Fourteen plays later, Wilkinson scored on a keeper for the touchdown, bringing Carthage (9-1) within one point at 20-19 with less than 20 seconds left. The Comets decided to go for the two-point conversion and scored on a reverse handoff from Wilkinson to Josh Yelvington. Yelvington dove over the right pylon for the conversion.

Indian River (8-2) received the ball one last time, but was unable to score in the final seconds.
