North Country Roundtable will honor 150th anniversary of Gettysburg commemoration


CANTON - “Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent, a new nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal,” began Abraham Lincoln 150 years ago in his famous Gettysburg Address.

Join the St. Lawrence County Historical Association for the 150th Anniversary Commemoration of the Gettysburg National Cemetery Dedication from noon – 8 p.m. Nov. 19 at the Silas Wright House, 3 East Main St., Canton. The commemoration is sponsored by Niles Asset Management, Inc., and SeaComm Federal Credit Union.

The North Country Civil War Roundtable presents this open house as part of the St. Lawrence County Historical Association’s Commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the Civil War, which was fought from 1861-1865. Around 7,000 men from St. Lawrence County enlisted to fight for the Union during the Civil War.

The 150th Anniversary Commemoration of the Gettysburg National Cemetery Dedication will be held as an open house and includes:

12 noon – Open House begins

Displays, videos, slide shows, refreshments

2 p.m. – Lincoln’s Trip to Gettysburg

Lecture by Terry Niles

4 p.m. – A Photo Reflection – Gettysburg 150th Living History Reenactment

Presentation by Scott Wilson

6 p.m. – Period music provided by students of Crane School of Music

6:30 p.m. – Dedication Reenactment and Gettysburg Address: Reenactment of the actual program from November 19, 1863, including the Gettysburg Address given by Abraham Lincoln reenactor Jack Baylis of Cassville.

The presenters at the open house are Mr. Niles and Mr. Wilson.

Mr. Niles, who serves on the St. Lawrence County Historical Association’s Finance Committee, lives in Brushton. He is active with the SLCHA’s Civil War Roundtable and serves on the SLCHA’s Civil War Sesquicentennial Commission.

Mr. Wilson lives in Louisville and is a Civil War artillery living historian. He is captain of the 11th New York Battery of Light Artillery reenactment unit, the personal owner of a full-scale Civil War cannon, and a frequent presenter at the St. Lawrence County Historical Association’s Civil War Roundtable.

The SLCHA Gift Shop is a great way to take some Civil War history home with replica Confederate coins and books like New York’s North Country and the Civil War and Life on the Homefront During the Civil War. SLCHA members receive a 10 percent discount on most items in the Gift Shop.

The St. Lawrence County Historical Association at the Silas Wright House is open noon to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and noon to 8 p.m. Friday.

Admission to the museum is free; admission to the archives is free for members and children, $2.50 for college students, and $5 for the general public. The St. Lawrence County Historical Association is located at 3 E. Main St., Canton. Parking is available in the back of the SLCHA, next to the museum’s main entrance.
