A 10th Mountain Division soldier will be posthumously awarded the Gold Medal of the Polish Armed Forces during a ceremony today at the Polish consulate in New York City.

Staff Sgt. Michael H. Ollis died saving a Polish officer during an insurgent attack Aug. 28 at Forward Operating Base Ghazni, Afghanistan, stepping in front of a militant wearing a suicide vest. Among the people scheduled to attend the ceremony is Lt. Karol Cierpica, the Polish officer whose life was saved by Sgt. Ollis.

Sgt. Ollis, 24, of Staten Island, served in the 2nd Battalion, 22nd Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team. He was awarded the Silver Star, the military’s third highest decoration for valor, at a ceremony in October at Fort Drum.
