NORWOOD - “ America Recycles Day” will be celebrated Saturday. In Norwood the Norwood Lake Association Recycling Center will celebrate 23 years of continuous operation.

Six to eight Lake Association volunteers will arrive at the center prior to 8 a.m. and by 11 a.m. more than 300 Norwood-area residents will dispose of 75 percent of their household waste at no cost.

They will dispose of newspapers, cardboard, glass, plastic, all metal and grocery plastic shopping bags.

The recycling center has become a social center as well where residents meet and visit as well as discuss issues important to them. A local resident recently related a problem he was having with one of the volunteers and after receiving a solution said he knew it would be solved if he brought his problem to the recycling center.

The center has been open every Saturday since Nov. 9, 1990, even on all holidays.

The Norwood Lake Association established the center when local town dumps closed and St. Lawrence County government was experiencing a very difficult time disposing of waste. The local Kiwanis Club had been recycling glass for years prior to 1990 and they moved their project to the recycling center soon after it was established.

A visit to the recycling center located on Bernard Avenue in the village of Norwood is advised prior to bringing recyclables so you may discuss what is accepted and the simple rules of the center. Hours are 8 to 11 a.m. each Saturday.
