Clarkson women’s basketball team drops opener to Utica College

OSWEGO - Junior transfer Cara Manfredi (Glastonbury, CT) scored 28 in her first career start for the Clarkson University women’s basketball team, but her effort wasn’t enough to power the Golden Knights past SUNY Oswego in the season-opener at the Max Ziel Tournament on Friday evening, as the Green and Gold fell 76-60.

The Golden Knights will take on SUNY Cobleskill in the consolation game of the tournament this afternoon.

Clarkson and Oswego spent the first 11 minutes of the contest scoring at a solid pace as the Lakers were shooting close to 50 percent from the floor. However, it was the Knights that were up by three points (22-19) with nine minutes remaining in the half. From that point on, though, the Clarkson offense went cold as the Lakers continued to pour in points. A 3-pointer from Mary Mazella of Oswego capped a 13-0 run by the Lakers in just over three and a half minutes, and although Clarkson was able to pull back to within six points with 3:46 remaining, Oswego ended the half with an 11-0 run to take a 17-point advantage into the locker room.

In the second half, the Lakers continued to shoot well from all spots on the floor, missing only seven shots (14-for-21) as they continued to build their advantage. A late run by the Knights closed the gap, but Clarkson’s shooting effort couldn’t match the run by Oswego.

Manfredi closed the game with a team-best 28 points, shooting 10-20 from the floor, including 3-8 from beyond the 3-point arc. She also added four steals. Sophomore Ashley Loggins (Albany, NY) nearly posted a double-double with 16 points and eight rebounds, going 7-16 from the floor.

Oswego had four starters in double-figures, led by Jenn Robbins and Paula Egelston, both of which had 14 points and five rebounds. Taylor Sorell added 12 points and six rebounds, going 4-6 from the field, and Heather Hebert produced 10 points and six rebounds, shooting 5-6 from the floor.
