Library’s fall book sale a success, wraps up today

The Ogdensburg Public Library’s annual fall book sale wraps up today a success.

“I think we’re at about $2,500 at this point and we’ve still got the bag sale on Saturday,” Executive Director Wayne L. Miller said Friday.

Originally held Nov. 7 through 9, the book sale continued by accident of bad weather when the placards promoting the event were left outside the library at 312 Washington St. after it was supposed to be over.

And people kept coming.

“It’s been a trickle, but it’s been a day-long trickle,” Mr. Miller said. “The busy-ness of the weekend has been replaced by a much more relaxing pace. All week long there have been a few people at a time taking their time looking through the couple of thousand items left, or about half of the original stock. Several people have stopped in multiple times on their lunch hours or their way home from work. It has been a pleasant experience for all concerned.”

The popularity of the spring and fall book sales, Mr. Miller said, is enduring.

“The book sale tends to generate in the range of $1,500 to $2,500 for the Friends of the Library to use in support of library programs,” he said. “This sale continues to be exceptional and when complete may be the best in my five years here. There are several contributing factors including the many donations of materials that helped us have a big selection of not just books, tremendous media support and a wonderful community turnout.”

The weather helped, too, although in a peculiar way.

“The high winds last Thursday (Nov. 7) caused us to heavily anchor the sandwich signs,” Mr. Miller said. “This meant the staff on duty Saturday were not physically able to bring in those signs. When the library reopened this week, people saw the signs and asked if the sale was continuing. Everything was being left in place until after the bag sale, so we said, ‘Sure thing.’”

The $2 bag sale is from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
