WADDINGTON – The village will once again play host to a national fishing event.

The Bass Anglers Sportsman Society announced Thursday that Waddington has been chosen to host the last of the 2014 B.A.S.S. Nation divisionals.

Approximately 250 anglers will launch from Waddington and take to the St. Lawrence River from Sept. 24 to 26 for the eastern divisional competition.

Each state sends a team of its top anglers to its respective divisional. Anglers who have qualified for the divisionals will compete on these lakes, and the top competitor from each state will advance to the 2014 B.A.S.S. Nation championship.

The championship will be held in October or November at a site yet to be selected.

The announcement comes on the heels of the Bassmaster Elite Series tournament held in August. Angler Brandon Palaniuk, whose Elite Series berth was earned through the B.A.S.S. Nation, won the event handily with 88 pounds, 12 ounces.

While the contract has not yet been signed or approved by the village board, Mayor Janet M. Otto-Cassada said Friday she was pleased to hear the announcement.

“I am just glad they were able to come up last year and explore our area and find our river and its contributories should be in the center of the fishing world,” Mrs. Otto-Cassada said. “The people in Northern New York have known this for decades. Now the rest of the world knows it.”

Like with the tournament held in August, a vendor show will be held throughout the qualifiers.

“We plan on doing another vendor show at the same place,” Mrs. Otto-Cassada said. “When we were doing this last time we said that we wanted to make this an annual event, so that we could give families of the north country a destination to go for the weekend.”

The total cost of the Elite tournament should be presented at the village’s December meeting, Mrs. Otto-Cassada said.

Officials from B.A.S.S. did not respond to a request for comment Friday.
