Massena Central receives 25 applications for superintendent position

MASSENA — The Massena Central School Board of Education has more than two dozen applicants to consider in the search for a superintendent.

Friday was the closing date for applications and supporting documents, and Thomas R. Burns, superintendent of the St. Lawrence-Lewis Board of Cooperative Educational Services said Monday that 25 applications have been received.

Mr. Burns is assisting the district with the search to replace William W. Crist, who will be begin work on March 10 as superintendent of Catholic schools for the Diocese of Syracuse.

Mr. Crist had been named the interim superintendent in Massena this year after a search to replace Roger B. Clough II netted four applications. Because Mr. Crist could serve only one year as interim superintendent, board members reopened their search process at the beginning of the 2013-14 school year. He had retired from the Oswego City School District prior to taking over at Massena Central.

Mr. Burns said he was pleased with the number of candidates who applied for the position this time around.

“That’s much better than before,” he said. “It looks like a pretty diverse group. That’s always helpful as well. It gives you a good basis for comparison.”

The next step, Mr. Burns said, is put together a binder that has the complete application materials for each candidate. Then it’s a case of whittling down the number of people who will be interviewed for the position.

“Upon completion of that paper screening, we would hope to have five or six candidates that the board could do initial interviews with. I would have to discuss that with board members. We kind of have that timeline in place,” Mr. Burns said.

Day-long district visits for finalists, including an open forum and final interview with the school board, are scheduled for the week of Jan. 6. The board is expected to select the new superintendent on Jan. 16, with an anticipated start date of March 3.

The board is offering a three-year contract with renewals contingent upon successful performance evaluations. The position calls for an initial salary of up to $150,000.
