CANTON — The former SUNY Canton student accused of setting fire to her Potsdam apartment has been indicted on felony arson charges.

Brandi Lee Saumier, 21, of 1071 Buckton Road, Winthrop, was indicted by a St. Lawrence County grand jury Monday and charged with second-degree arson.

Ms. Saumier is accused of setting a fire Oct. 25 in her first-floor apartment at 28 Pierrepont Ave., knowing that others were in the building at the time. Nine people escaped unharmed from the blaze that destroyed the building.

In a statement to police, Ms. Saumier, who had been undergoing psychiatric evaluation at Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center, Ogdensburg, admitted to starting the fire at 1:30 a.m. with no intention of hurting anyone.

Ms. Saumier was released from St. Lawrence County jail on Nov. 7 on $5,000 cash bail.
