CANTON — The Canton man accused of trying to run his family off the road in a two-car crash following a domestic dispute in October has been charged with four counts of attempted murder in an 11 count indictment Monday.

A St. Lawrence County grand jury charged Douglas A. Matthews Jr., 33, of 324 Minor Street Road, with four counts of second-degree attempted murder, two counts of second degree assault and one count of second-degree mischief, all felonies.

Mr. Matthews is accused of driving alongside and then repeatedly ramming a car driven by his mother-in-law, Susan M. Latimer, 65, causing it to go off the road and overturn in a cornfield on Route 310 about a mile south of County Route 24.

In the car with Ms. Latimer were Mr. Matthews’s wife, Jenelle M., 33, and their two sons, Owen, 5, and Gavin, 9.

The incident occurred following an alleged domestic dispute at Mr. Matthews’s residence with his wife.

Ms. Latimer, the only person injured seriously in the crash, was rescued by first responders and flown by LifeNet helicopter to Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington, Vt. She was released from the hospital the afternoon following the crash.

Mr. Matthews is also being charged with two counts of endangering the welfare of a child, one count of fourth-degree criminal mischief and one count of second-degree reckless endangerment, all misdemeanors.

He remains in jail on $100,000 cash bail or $200,000 bond. Mr. Matthews is jailed in Franklin County because he worked as a corrections officer at the St. Lawrence County jail, Canton.

He was placed on unpaid leave from his job after his arrest and was fired on Nov. 8.
