Potsdam man jailed after allegedly punching, strangling girlfriend

AGGRAVATED CRIMINAL CONTEMPT - POTSDAM - St. Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department deputies charged Steven Amador, 22, of 92 state Route 345, Apt. 2, Potsdam, with a felony count of first-degree aggravated criminal contempt, third-degree assault and criminal obstruction of breathing after responding to a domestic dispute complaint at 8:05 p.m. Monday at the residence.

Deputies allege Amador forced his 19-year-old girlfriend to the ground and strangled her during an argument. He also reportedly punched his girlfriend in the face, injuring her.

She was residing at the residence with Amador, but the altercation violated an order of protection already in place that directed Amador not to harass, annoy or alarm his teenage girlfriend.

Amador was arraigned by Pierrepont Town Justice Robert Camp and sent to the St. Lawrence County Correctional Facility with bail set at $1,000. The court also signed a temporary order of protection directing Amador to have no contact with the female.

Sheriff’s deputies were assisted by the Potsdam Police Department.
