LeRay connector road opens, may allow future housing growth

A new road connecting Walmart on Route 11 in LeRay to the Eagle Ridge Village housing complex is open.

The mile-long road connects Johnson Road and Kestrel Drive, alleviating traffic for the approximately 700 units of housing within the complex and increasing safety for residents traveling to and from Fort Drum.

“It’s like a back entrance to their facilities,” town Supervisor Ronald C. Taylor said. “It’s going to free up all of those people without them even going onto 342.”

Among the benefits for the new road is increasing the chance of new housing for that space. The indirect path of the road between the shopping area and the housing complex was planned to help increase potential expansion opportunities.

“There’s a mile of brand new road back off from the roadway,” Mr. Taylor said. “We could and should have some growth up in there.”

He said the new road will be useful for the Indian River Central School District, giving bus drivers the benefit of a traffic light when they enter Route 11.

The price tag for the road, which had its first traffic last week, is about $1.3 million, with the town’s share coming out to $340,000 through money generated by Fort Drum’s Residential Communities Initiative. The town’s funding was approved in May 2012.

The rest of the money for the project included a $500,000 grant from the state Department of Transportation, a $200,000 state grant acquired by the Development Authority of the North Country and $300,000 from the Jefferson County Highway Department for construction assistance.
