SUNY Canton expels two, disbands fraternity in hazing

CANTON — The SUNY Canton Judicial Board has permanently expelled two students and suspended five others after an incident of hazing less than two weeks ago.

The college’s Zeta Alpha Phi fraternity has been permanently disbanded.

The seven disciplined students were the only members of ZAP, according to SUNY Canton Dean of Students Courtney B. Bish.

The names of these students cannot be released because of the federal Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act, according to college officials.

Two students were given six-year suspensions; the other three were suspended for five years.

“The sanctions were based on their individual involvement in the hazing and if they had prior judicial sanctions,” Ms. Bish said.

Officials will not disclose the details of the hazing, which occurred at an off-campus residence, until a separate investigation by Canton village police has been completed.

Ms. Bish previously said the incident involved physical and mental abuse against a student looking to join the fraternity.

ZAP previously had been suspended for three years after another incident of hazing in 2006. This past offense contributed to the college’s decision to disband the fraternity permanently.

“We considered the 2006 hazing incident also in our decision, and continued at this point that we couldn’t go forward with the organization and still maintain student safety,” Ms. Bish said.

This disciplinary action marks the end of the college’s investigation. The police investigation continues, but no charges have been filed.
