HOLLAND, Mich. A tough loss in the third set was too much for the Clarkson University volleyball team to overcome as the Golden Knights fell in four sets to Cal Lutheran, losing 25-20, 21-25, 29-27, 25-13 in an NCAA Division III quarterfinal Thursday night at the DeVos Fieldhouse.
Clarkson (36-7 overall) was tied 1-1 with the Regals but trailed 24-17 in the third set, just one point away from losing the set. The Golden Knights rallied and took a 25-24 lead before eventually dropping the set 29-27, falling behind 2-1 in the match.
Cal Lutheran (34-1) got off to an 11-3 lead in the fourth set and cruised to a 25-13 win to take the match.
Victoria Kirkemo and Xiao Liang sparked Clarksons rally in the third set as each player produced three kills when the Golden Knights scored eight straight points. Clarkson also rallied from a 19-16 deficit in the second game.
The Regals were led by first-team All-American Kylie Mclogan, who finished with 22 kills. Allie Eason produced 12 kills and Jackie Russell added 38 assists.
Kirkemo and Liang each finished with 14 kills for the Golden Knights and Adrienne Walker added 11. Lani Durio led Clarkson with 30 assists.
