POTSDAM - The SUNY Potsdam men’s hockey team opened a home-and-home weekend series against Route 11 rival SUNY Canton by posting its first win of the season at the Maxcy Hall Arena in front of a pack crowd on Friday night.

The Bears, who had dropped their first six games of the season, overcame an early deficit before going on to gain a 5-3 non-league decision over the Roos (1-6-1).

Lee Melde opened the scoring just 2:46 into the game off an assist from Nick Vasilopoulos before the Bears battled back to take the lead on a pair of power play goals four minutes apart late in the first period. Trevor Cope knotted the game at 1-1 assisted by Todd Thomas and Max Fogel at the 12:38 mark before Bill Pascalli gave Potsdam its first lead at 16:39 assisted by Erick Ware and Adam Place.

The Roos pulled even at 2-2 with their only power play goal of the game just 1:18 into the second period as Cory Giczewski converted from Kristian Leach but the Bears regained the lead at the 10:19 mark of the middle frame when Vinny Caligiuri finished off a play set up by Ken Simon and Dan McCarney. Ryan Miller made it 4-2 at 8:29 of the third period with assists going from Caligiuri and Zach Blake before Mike Arnold closed out the scoring for Potsdam by finishing off a play set up by Todd Thomas with 1:54 left in regulation.

Giczewski made it a two-goal game when he broke through for a shorthanded goal with one second remaining assisted by Nick Vasilopoulos.

Shane Talarico made 20 saves backstopping the Bears to their first win of the season while Louis Puig kept the game close with a 39-save performance working the SUNY Canton crease.

The two teams complete their weekend series this evening at the Roos House arena starting at 7 p.m.

SLU BEATS RIT

St. Lawrence University’s men’s hockey team has played 2006 games in the history of the program and has never played to a scoreless tie and Friday night’s non-league game at the Rochester Institute of Technology didn’t figure to break that streak.

The Saints, who are second nationally in points, points per game and tied for second in goals scored among all Division I teams went up against a struggling RIT team which ranked 47th of 59 Division I programs in offense. The Saints went three for six on the power play and killed four of six RIT power plays en route a 5-3 victory in the first of the two game set.

Friday’s game did not start exactly the way the Saints had in mind as Tiger freshman Todd Skirving scored on an unassisted breakaway just 58 seconds into the game, but the Saints battled back to tie it with a power play goal by Jeremy Wick at the 7:34 mark

The Saints grabbed a lead on their second power play chance of the game at 1:09 as Pat Doherty and Brian Ward broke down the middle with Doherty dishing to Ward in the right faceoff circle for a shot into the back of th net.

The Saint power play continued to cook in the second period as Brian Ward gave the Saints a 2-1 lead on their second man-advantage of the game, finishing off a two-man rush with Pat Doherty with a snap shot to the upper corner from the right faceoff circle just 1:09 into the period. RIT came back to tie again when Greg Noyes scored his second of the year on a Tiger power play at 9:50, but the Saints made it three-for-three on the power play at 12:50 when Gavin Bayreuther wristed his fourth of the year into the upper corner on a five-on-three from Greg Carey and Baker at 12:50.

Tyler Parks improved to 2-0 in starts for the Saints as he made 22 saves for the win Jordan while Ruby had 20 for RIT as the two teams had 25 shots on goal each.
