Carthage - Hilda C. Phillips, 91, of 443 S. Clinton St., died Saturday afternoon, November 23, 2013, at her residence where she was under the care of her family and Hospice of Jefferson County.

Hilda was born in Hammond on January 23, 1922, the daughter of the late Leslie W. and Iva Dake Chase. She graduated from Hammond High School in 1940 and Potsdam State University College in 1944. She received her Master’s Degree in Education from Potsdam in 1969. She married H. Dyer Phillips on July 18, 1945 at the Hammond Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Halbert Campbell officiating. Mr. Phillips, a former regional general manager of timberlands for the St. Regis Paper Co., died on May 8, 2011.

Hilda taught school for a year each in Cortland and Syracuse and for 23 years in the Carthage Central School District.

She was a member of the United Community Church, former member of Carlowden Country Club and the Eustayantha Ladies Club. Her interests included, walking, golf and traveling.

She is survived by two sons: John Phillips of Flint, TX and Daniel Phillips of South Otselic, NY, several Grandchildren and Great Grandchildren, one sister: Catherine C. Speno of Watertown, and several nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her son, Herbert L. Phillips, 2 sisters, Mary Calzada and Margery Chase and 2 brothers, Harold and Allen Chase.

Memorial services will be held on Wednesday, December 11th at 11:00 AM at the United Community Church, Carthage with the Rev. Jane E. Wagner officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Carthage. There will be no calling hours. Arrangements are with the Bezanilla-McGraw Funeral Home, Carthage.
