BRASHER FALLS — Although the bids for a new highway garage came in over budget, Brasher officials awarded contracts Monday and said they’ll figure out where to obtain the rest of the funding.

“We have a little problem financially. We have to work this out at our table, and we will,” Town Supervisor M. James Dawson said.

Town Council members awarded the general construction contract to Danko Construction Corp., Massena, which bid $1,008,284. The contract for plumbing went to Norwood Plumbing, which bid $66,700. The electrical contract was awarded to Jordstat Construction Inc., Alexandria Bay, which bid $98,949. Mechanical work was awarded to Eni Mechanical Inc., Gouverneur, with a bid of $262,900.

Mr. Dawson said during a previous meeting that the bids amounted to $136,000 over budget. But, he said Monday, the Town Council would find a way to come up with the funding.

“Our bids came in over budget. That’s not your problem; it’s ours,” he told representatives from each company who were on hand to sign the contract documents. “We’re going to take care of it.”

He asked representatives to keep change orders to a minimum, and suggested they let him know if they came across any redundancies in the project that could be changed to save money.

Planning to use casino gaming compact funds for the project, the town budgeted $1.3 million for the new building two years ago. Estimates from Beardsley Design Associates, its architectural and engineering firm, indicated it could cost $1.2 million to $1.5 million.
