NORWOOD The Norwood man and his mother who were charged with kidnapping a 10-year-old Pennsylvania girl who the man claims is his daughter have been freed from jail and have had their charges dropped.
Peter A. Tarbox, 39, and his mother, Annette M. Williams, 55, both of Maple Street, returned to Pennsylvania to face charges of kidnapping for ransom, interference with custody of a child and endangering the welfare of a child, after being held in St. Lawrence County jail since Aug. 15 in the alleged kidnapping of Alexandria Jade Long.
According to WNEP-TV in Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, the felony charges were dismissed Monday by a district judge after the prosecutions witnesses didnt show up to testify at a hearing, even though police called to remind them. Mr. Tarbox and Ms. Williams were being held in the Schuylkill County jail,
St. Lawrence County Public Defender Stephen D. Button represented Mr. Tarbox when he was being held in St. Lawrence County for extradition. On Monday night, Mr. Button said that since the start of the legal process, Mr. Tarbox has maintained his innocence.
His sole desire has been to be reunited with his family, Mr. Button said. I am sure he is pleased with this outcome and looking forward to a holiday spent surrounded by his family and friends.
Mr. Button said Pennsylvania authorities still could reinstate the charges. We hope that this ordeal is over for Mr. Tarbox and Ms. Williams, Mr. Button said. We fully expect that upon review, the authorities will not seek to refile the charges against Mr. Tarbox.
